Temporary Buildings in General

What is the difference between a temporary building and a steel building?

The main differences between temporary buildings and conventional steel buildings are the materials of the building's frame, the design of the roof and the anchoring technique. Temporary buildings can be used as a permanent solution, despite the word temporary in the name, and are also suited for demounting and re-installation at another location. Also, temporary buildings typically have a PVC tarpaulin roof and are anchored with earth pins on gravel, asphalt (fixed substrate) - dedicated preparatory groundwords are mostly not necessary. Opposed to this, steel buildings have a steel structure, a hard roof made of trapezoidal sheet metal or insulated pannels, and are anchored with heavy duty plugs or directly into the concrete slab. Moreover, steel buildings are not relocate-able, require a dedicated concrete foundation and are very time consuming in the installation.

What advantages do temporary buildings have?

Temporary buildings do not require a concrete foundation. This leads to substantial both time and cost savings and result in you using your building faster at lower costs. In addition, temporary buildings by Herchenbach are smartly engineered and can be delivered within days. Often, we can build the building and hand over the keys in as little as two weeks from receiving the purchase order. Furthermore, tempoary buildings can be demounted and relocated, or extended in length after they have been installed. We have been manufacturing and building temporary buildings for decades and this building solution has proven amazingly economical and efficient. Large as well as small companies rely on these buildings.

In what situations is a temporary building suited? What fields of application are there?

Herchenbach is happy to count hundreds of industrial and other companies to its customer base. Both large and small companies use our buildings and we have installed more than 2000 buildings in Europe alone. Often, our structures are used as temporary retail buildings, warehouses, production buildings or showroom spaces. The rapid delivery time and the inherent flexibility makes these buildings very popular.

Which companies use temporary buildings?

We have businesses from all fields using our buildings. In addition, we also sell some smaller temporary buildings to private individuals. Also, a part of our business is with local authorities and international organizations (disaster relief and emergency housing). All of these are attracted by our unbeatable prices and our excellent service and outstanding quality.

How durable are temporary buildings?

Many of our first-time customers do not know what to expect when they talk to us about our temporary buildings. This changes dramatically when they see one of our buildings in use or experience their own Herchenbach building after it has been installed. Herchenbach temporary buildings are extremely durable and can compete with conventional buildings in terms of stability and long-term use. We only use highest quality materials for our buildings and invest substantial time and money into R&D and quality assurance. We employ the most modern production techniques and only work with the most reputable suppliers. Our building structures are made of highest grade aluminium, resulting in a corrosion-free core building structure. We will gladly introduce you to one of our current customers so that you can experience one of our installed buildings live and hear about our excellent reputation first-hand.

Are temporary buildings made for permanent use?

Yes, our buildings are all made to last. From first drawing to the final assembly, we always have durability and impeccable quality at our heart. This is illustrated by our extremely satisfied customer base and rate of repeat customers. Some even have more than a dozen buildings from Herchenbach. Once the building is installed, it can only be damaged by outside influences. If your forklift driver hits a wall that is no problem: we will come out with one of our expert repair teams and have that wall piece fixed quickly. The main structure of the building and the tarpaulin are designed to outperform.

What materials do you use for the structure of your temporary buildings?

The main structure of all of Herchenbach's temporary buildings is high grade aluminium. All our buildings are adapted to the local snow loads and wind actions (Eurocode, according to BS EN 1991, incl. national annex) to ensure a permanent installation and suitability with British Building Regulations. The connecting pieces and the base plates are made from stainless treated steel.

Are temporary buildings recyclable?

Sustainability is a very important topic for Herchenbach, and we have been focusing on this topic since our inception in 1924. Our aim has always been to ensure a very high degree of recyclable components in our buildings. As of the first drawing line in our technical department all the way until we come to your building and repair something, we focus on these topics. We also require our suppliers to not make any compromises with regards to recyclability of our buildings and materials. Our buildings can be used for many decades and we can be proud of our buildings being almost full recyclable.

What does "soft roof" mean?

Compared to a hard roof with fixed sheetmetal or tiles on the roof, we use a so called soft roof for our buildings. The tarpaulin we use has a tensile strength of 250kg per square meter and you could even walk and jump around on the roofs of our buildings without breaking them. In addition, the tarpaulin roof is translucent, allowing for very attractive light conditions in the building. This soft roof is on about 98% of our buildings and the customer satisfaction is very close to 100%: you will have difficulty finding an equally durable building with a fixed hard roof at the same price point and with the same delivery time!

How durable is Herchenbach's "soft roof"?

Herchenbach uses highly durable PVC tarpaulin material (suitable for industrial applications) for its roofs. It has a tensile stength of 250 kg/m² and is manufactured in Germany to our specifications and is up to the highest quality standards. If you would like a special colour for your temporary building, we can have the colours of your choice applied to the PVC tarpaulin material. Prints are possible as well.

What is Heba-Therm®?

Herchenbach Tempoary Buildings are available with various different roof systems: we offer simple PVC tarpaulin roofs with and without inner tarpaulins (to avoid condensation water) or our specially insulated Heba-Therm® roof tarpaulin. This patent protected innovation has excellent acoustics and insulation characteristics (insulation up to 0,85 W/m²K). Insulated temporary warehouses constructed with this Heba-Therm® roof are unbeatable in price and installation speed.

What sort of substrate does a Herchenbach Temporary Building require?

Herchenbach temporary buildings can be installed on compacted ground (gravel) as well as on asphalt, composite paving or concrete. Compared to conventional buildings, the requirements for a temporary building are very simple. Depending on the use of the building, a concrete underground may be necessary (in case you have a racking system, for example). Should you be unsure as to the substrate of your planned construction site, please reach out to our team and we will gladly schedule a free site-visit to discuss the details.

Can I install a temporary building on a parking lot?

Yes, this is easily possible. However, we would require some photos of the site for a final judgement, as there may be some large cracks, gas- or electricity-lines or drain pipes in the ground. Overall, we can build a temporary building on compacted gravel ar anything of higher quality.

How should the ground be prepared?

We typically decide on the specific preparations after an on-site visit or a detailed discussion with our technical experts. Often, no preparations need to be carried out as temporary buildings can be built on various ground types. However, for the installation, the construction site must be free of any obstacles and objects and have a gradient of less than 1% slope in either direction. Stronger slopes will need to be flattened beforehand. Alternatively, our installation team can shorten some pillars of our building to eaven the building out.

Can a temporary building be moved after it has been installed?

Yes, temporary buildings by Herchenbach can be relocated after they have been installed. To do this, we will demount the building and transport it to the new site, and then install it there again. This is a simple process and we do this regularly for our customers. If you are interested in this option, we can give you a free quote for this procedure.

Can a temporary building be fully removed once we do not need it anymore?

Yes, of course. Our buildings can be removed completely so that nothing remains on site after the de-installation. Many of our customers only rent the premises on which they install our temporary buildings, and this building option has proven ideal for those uses as no traces of the building remain. Also, our buildings can be entirely used again.

Does Herchenbach offer used temporary buildings?

Yes, we regularly offer used temporary buildings for sale on our website. We also sell buildings of our customers in commission. These attractively priced offers are highly popular as the used buildings have the same benefits and qualities as our new temporary buildings.

Can I buy a building kit and build the building myself?

Temporary Buildings by Herchenbach are developed, manufactured and sold solely by us. We designed this modular building system and we suggest our experienced expert teams transport and install your temporary building for you. Infrequently we do have customers who wish to pick up and install their building by themselves, but we do not advise you to do this as all warranties expire if you install the building without our installation team. Instead, we suggest you book an installation appointment with one of our specialist installation supervisors who will then supervise your workers during the installation.

How can I protect my stored goods in the temporary building from condensation water?

To avoid condensation water dropping from the roof we install an inner tarpaulin. This is a well established solution that many of our customers buy. In addition, this inner tarpaulin creates an additional insulation layer between the outside roof and the inside of the building.

Specifications of temporary buildings

In what sizes are Herchenbach temporary buildings available?

Herchenbach temporary buildings can be fully adapted to your individual requirements. However, in order to ensure you receive a cost efficient building solution from us, we advise you to choose one of our standard building widths. These clearspan widths are 5m, 7.5m, 10m, 12.5m, 15m, 20m and 25m. All larger widths are built with multi-bay buildings. Popular building sizes with our customers are the 10m x 10m temporary building, the 10m x 20m building and the 20m x 40m warehouse building.

In what side heights are Herchenbach temporary buildings available?

The side height (eave height) of Herchenbach buildings ranges from 3.4m to 6.4m. In between, we offer 5.4 and 6.4m. Other heights are possible upon request and depending on the local snow loads and wind actions. The total building height depends on the width of the building and on the eave height and can be between 4.22m and 10.5m high.

How high is the interior usable height of the building?

The interior usable height of a Herchenbach temporary building depends on the chosen eave height. Typically, we install tension ties in each frame, running from eave to eave at ca. 20cm below the eave height. This would mean that a building with 3.4m eave height has a tension tie running at 3.2m. All space below this tension tie is freely usable height for you. The tension tie has the task of carry the snow loads and wind actions, and often can not be left away.

What roof shapes are available?

Temporary Buildings are highly standardised to ensure cost efficiency and fast delivery and installation times. The optimal roof design that all temporary buildings therefore have is the gabled roof with one ridge in the middle, and a slope of ca. 18 degrees. Customers who require a different roof design can contact our experts to discuss alternative building construction methods.

Can a temporary building be extended after it has been installed?

Temporary Buildings by Herchenbach can be extented in length without substantial effort after the building has been installed. Shortening is possible too. It is particularly cost efficient if the extension takes place in a increment (or multiple increments) of the chosen truss spacing (4m or 5m, depending on the building type). Our team will gladly offer you a detailed price quote for the extension or shortening of your building.
